In Gothic, King Mirtana needs magic ore to build weapons for his army as the Orcs attack. He, therefore, sentenced all the prisoners of the land to life imprisonment in the iron ore mine. To prevent the prisoners from escaping, the king instructs a group of powerful wizards to build a magical guard that can be entered but impossible to exit.
But the guard gets out of control and covers a large part of the land around the mine, and also imprisons the wizards. The prisoners take advantage of the chaos to kill the guards and occupy the area inside the fence. A few years pass.
